Climate Justice and Disaster Risk Management

At Community Action for Health and Development (CAHED), we understand that the effects of climate change are not just environmental—they are social, economic, and deeply human. Vulnerable populations, particularly women, youth, and marginalized communities, often bear the greatest burden of climate-related shocks. That’s why CAHED integrates climate justice and disaster risk management into all our programs, ensuring that communities can adapt, survive, and thrive in the face of change.

Why Climate Justice Matters

Climate change is one of the greatest challenges of our time. Droughts, floods, food shortages, and extreme weather events continue to threaten livelihoods across Kenya and Africa. Yet, those who contribute the least to global emissions are often the ones most affected. Climate justice is about fairness—making sure vulnerable communities have the resources, voice, and opportunities to cope with and respond to climate impacts.

Our Approach to Climate Adaptation and Mitigation

CAHED promotes sustainable solutions that address both the causes and the impacts of climate change. Our interventions include:

  • Sustainable Natural Resource Management: Training communities on reforestation, soil conservation, and responsible use of water and land resources.

  • Climate-Smart Agriculture: Encouraging farmers to adopt resilient practices such as agroforestry, drought-tolerant crops, and renewable energy solutions.

  • Community-Based Disaster Risk Reduction: Building local capacity to prepare for and respond to floods, droughts, and other disasters, reducing loss of life and property.

  • Promoting Renewable Energy: Supporting clean energy alternatives to reduce dependence on fossil fuels while creating green economic opportunities.

Advocacy for Just Transitions

CAHED goes beyond service delivery by actively advocating for fair and inclusive climate policies. We ensure that women and youth are at the center of climate solutions, recognizing their potential as change-makers. Our advocacy efforts push for just transitions—ensuring that the shift to green economies does not leave behind vulnerable groups but instead creates opportunities for them to thrive.

Impact in Communities

Through our climate justice and disaster risk management programs, CAHED has helped communities reduce vulnerability to climate shocks, restore degraded ecosystems, and adopt sustainable livelihoods. These efforts not only protect the environment but also secure food systems, safeguard water sources, and improve community resilience against future disasters.

Our Vision for a Climate-Resilient Future

We envision a future where every community has the knowledge, tools, and resources to adapt to climate change, mitigate risks, and actively participate in building a greener world. By integrating climate justice into all areas of development, CAHED continues to champion sustainability, resilience, and fairness for generations to come.
